Proficiency levels on the CEFR scale
The Common European Framework describes language ability in six levels — from beginner A1 to mastery C2.
You understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. You can introduce yourself and ask simple questions about personal details — where you live, people you know, things you have.
You understand frequently used expressions on familiar topics: yourself, family, shopping, work. You can talk about simple routine matters and describe your surroundings in a few sentences.
You understand the main points of clear texts on familiar topics and can cope with most situations while travelling. You can describe experiences and events and briefly justify your opinions.
You understand complex texts on concrete and abstract topics. You interact with enough fluency and spontaneity that conversation with native speakers is natural and effortless for both sides.
You understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and grasp implicit meaning. You express yourself fluently and spontaneously, using the language flexibly and effectively for work, study and life.
You understand virtually everything you hear or read with ease and convey finer shades of meaning precisely, even in complex situations. Your command of the language is close to that of a native speaker.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the test take?+
About 5–7 minutes. The test has 18 questions — three per level from A1 to C2, with difficulty rising gradually.
Is it free? Do I need to register?+
Yes, the test is completely free and needs no registration or email. You see your result right after the last question.
What do the levels A1–C2 mean?+
It is the CEFR scale: A1 and A2 are beginner levels, B1 and B2 are intermediate (independent user), C1 and C2 are advanced (proficient).
How accurate is the result?+
The test gives a reliable estimate of your level across grammar, vocabulary and reading. It is not an official certificate — for official proof of level you take exams such as IELTS, TOEFL, DELE or the relevant state exams.
What should I do after I learn my level?+
The fastest way to raise your level is to read books slightly harder than your current one, with instant translation. After the test we immediately suggest books for your level.
Can I take the test again?+
Yes. Questions are chosen at random from a larger bank, so each attempt differs — you can re-check yourself or track progress.
